Line Graph Explorer

What happens when you change y = mx + c? Enter your numbers and watch the lines move.

Your lines

Change m (slope) or c (starting height). Try decimals and negative numbers too.

Try an experiment

Give two lines the same m but different c values. Can they ever meet?

A straight line has no vertices (corners). Dots mark where lines meet an axis or one another.

The coordinate plane

Both axes use the same scale, so angles stay true. Dots show (x, y) coordinates. Lines continue beyond the graph.

Compare your lines

The smaller angle between each pair of lines (0° to 90°).

m controls the slope

For every 1 step to the right, go m steps up. A negative m goes down. A larger |m| makes a steeper line. When m = 0, the line is horizontal.

c moves the line up or down

The line crosses the y-axis at (0, c). Changing c slides the line up or down without changing its slope.

Try it yourself

Compare y = x and y = −x. What angle do they make? Then change one to y = 2x. Which line is steeper?
